How PedalBase rates bikes

At PedalBase we rate bikes on technical facts and specifications — not on impressions or sponsored reviews.

Every bike is broken down across its main building blocks: Drivetrain, Frame, Wheels, and Motor and Suspension. This page shows exactly how our rating system is built. Our criteria rest on concrete numbers, geometry thresholds and the manufacturers' own component hierarchies, so you can always see what you actually get for your money.

What the rating covers

This page describes only how a bike's components are ranked on our scale. The rating starts from the manufacturers' official technical data and measures the quality, materials and construction of the components.

The rating deals with the equipment on paper. It does not measure individual ride feel or fit, since those depend on the rider.

No overall score

A bike is never boiled down to a single number, a star rating or an average on PedalBase. An average blurs the balance between the components and hides where a bike's strengths and compromises actually lie.

By keeping Drivetrain, Frame, Wheels, Motor and Suspension on separate, independent axes, you can see at once how a bike is built and where the manufacturer put the budget.

Our 5 tiers — from Basic to Elite

To make bikes and brands easy to compare, every category uses the same five-step scale. Performance therefore covers the same relative quality in the market whether you are looking at the gearing, the wheels or the frame.

  1. Basic Everyday and city-bike equipment outside the established component groups, or unclassified base materials.
  2. Core Established entry-level equipment from recognised manufacturers. Solid product lines at the bottom of the quality range.
  3. Balanced The broad middle. Reliable, good-quality equipment, where the large majority of modern enthusiast bikes sit.
  4. Performance The tier just below the very top. You get close to 100% of the performance and technology of the flagship models, at a lower price.
  5. Elite The absolute top. Flagship groupsets, the most advanced carbon constructions and the most optimised wheelsets on the market.

Reading the scale in practice

  • Differences between the categories are normal. It is very common for the wheels to sit a tier or two below the drivetrain. Many manufacturers fit a strong groupset from the factory but save on the wheelset to hold the price down. Our scale lets that difference show plainly.
  • Missing data shows as a dash (–). When a component cannot be identified precisely from the manufacturer's specifications, the field shows a dash rather than a tier. We never automatically place an unidentified part at the lowest tier — missing information and cheap equipment are two different things.

The five categories

When we rate a bike on PedalBase we break it into up to five independent categories. We never merge them into an average, because each category says something distinct about the bike's quality and its price:

  • Drivetrain — shifting, crankset and cassette (applies to every geared bike)
  • Frame — frame material, construction and finishing (applies to every bike)
  • Wheels — wheelset, rims and hubs (applies to every bike)
  • Motor — drive unit, torque and system (applies to electric bikes)
  • Suspension — fork and rear shock (applies to mountain and e-mountain bikes)

Drivetrain

The drivetrain is the heart of the bike: the components that carry the power from your legs, or from the motor, to the rear wheel.

What we rate — and what we leave out

We measure drivetrain quality from four core components:

  1. Rear derailleur
  2. Shifters
  3. Crankset
  4. Cassette

Chain and bottom bracket are recorded but do not feed into the tier itself. They are classic wear parts, replaced repeatedly over a bike's life, and manufacturers almost always fit them at a quality matching the rest of the group. Letting them move the rating would add noise rather than clarity.

The weakest-link principle

Manufacturers often fit an eye-catching rear derailleur from a high component group (Shimano XT or SRAM GX, say) while saving money on the cassette or the crankset.

At PedalBase the rule is simple: the drivetrain's tier is set by its lowest-ranked core component. A drivetrain is never stronger than its weakest link.

Specific cases in our rating

  • Established entry groups vs. unbranded parts. There is a real difference between kinds of cheap equipment. We draw a sharp line between unclassified base components (Basic) and genuine, named entry groupsets from makers like Shimano and SRAM (Claris, Sora, Altus and so on). Those groups sit at the affordable end of the market, but they are properly engineered product lines with high reliability, and they therefore land at Core.
  • Electronic shifting does not automatically move the tier. Electronic shifting (Shimano Di2, SRAM AXS) is excellent technology, but it is a property, not an automatic mark of quality. A mechanical top groupset (Dura-Ace, XTR) still ranks above an electronic mid-range group on materials and precision. Electronic shifting therefore gets its own badge, while the tier reflects the real quality of the equipment.
  • Wireless shifters are rated in context. Many modern wireless shifters are shared across several model steps. Rather than letting a universal shifter drag down an otherwise uncompromising drivetrain, we rate wireless controllers by the level of the system as a whole — unless the controller specifically belongs to a lower series.

Frame

The frame is the bike's foundation. It determines weight, stiffness, comfort and durability. Rather than simply looking at what the frame is made of, our rating measures the real quality of the construction and the material.

Material vs. construction quality

At PedalBase we separate the frame's material type (a badge) from its quality tier:

  • The badge tells you the actual material: aluminium, carbon, steel or titanium.
  • The tier tells you how advanced that particular construction is.

Which also means carbon is not automatically better than aluminium. A high-technology hydroformed aluminium frame with double-butted tubing and integrated cabling ranks above a simple entry-level carbon frame.

Named grades vs. vague descriptions

We draw a sharp line between specific, named material grades and unspecific descriptions. A frame the manufacturer describes only as "alloy" sits at a lower tier than one where the manufacturer names the exact alloy (6061 T6, say, or a triple-butted alloy) and stands behind the workmanship.

No guessing when data is missing

When a manufacturer leaves out key details about the frame, we show a dash (–) rather than guess. We rate only from confirmed technical data — which is what keeps an incomplete specification from ever being mistaken for poor quality.

Wheels

The wheelset is one of the single most important factors in a bike's weight, acceleration and handling — and it is also where manufacturers most often save money to hold the total price down.

Why the tier covers the wheelset only

The tier under Wheels rates the wheelset — not the tires. That is a deliberate choice.

It is very common — particularly on mid-range and enthusiast bikes — for a bike to ship with top-class tires (Continental Grand Prix 5000 or Schwalbe Racing Ralph, for instance) while the wheelset itself is a heavier, entry-level aluminium wheel.

If tires counted towards the tier, a good pair costing a few hundred kroner could hide a cheap wheelset. Tires are also a wear part you replace several times over a bike's life — the wheelset stays. So the tier is about the wheelset.

How we rate the wheelset

When we analyse a wheelset, we look at the construction as a whole:

  • Complete wheelsets. Named quality wheelsets from recognised brands are rated on their overall specification and market position.
  • Built wheels (rim and hub). Where a bike lists its wheels as separate components, we weight the rim most heavily, but let a high-quality hub or named brand spokes lift the overall rating.
  • Focus on the wheel itself. We tidy up the specification and remove accessories such as thru-axles and quick-release levers from the calculation, so secondary parts cannot disturb the rating of the wheel itself.

Motor and suspension

Motor and suspension are specialised categories, covering electric bikes and mountain bikes respectively.

Suspension: balanced front and rear

Applies to mountain bikes and e-MTBs.

Suspension covers the fork and, on full-suspension bikes, the rear shock. As with the drivetrain, we apply the weakest-link principle:

  • The overall suspension rating is set by the lower-ranked of the two units.
  • A bike with a top-class rear shock paired with a cheap or flexy fork therefore takes its overall rating from the fork.

That makes sure you do not buy a bike with an unbalanced suspension setup, where one end of the bike holds the other back.

Motor: system quality over raw Nm

Applies to every electric bike.

The motor is rated as a unit in its own right, on its platform, build quality, sensors and system integrity.

We deliberately separate the motor's quality tier from its torque (Nm):

  • The motor tier (Basic to Elite) reflects the motor's software, weight, heat dissipation, pedal feel and reliability (Bosch, Shimano, Specialized or Brose, for example).
  • Torque (Nm) is a physical measurement of how hard the motor pulls.

A cheap, unrefined hub motor can easily quote a high 90 Nm without having the finely judged power delivery a premium 85 Nm mid-drive gives you. Separating quality from newton-metres lets you compare both the pedalling experience and the raw pulling power.
